A hub is one of the simplest of devices in a computer
network, it is physically a box with some RJ45 ports (modular connector used for
Ethernet computer network cables) that allows you to connect multiple
devices together. When a computer requests information from the network or
another system the hub will broadcast all of the information to all the devices
connected to it and each device will figure out what information is corresponds
to itself. Hubs cannot be programmed or have memory of the devices plugged into
its ports, you could say they have no intelligence.
